On the Simpsons DVD commentary, the writers talk about how they often slip something really dirty into scripts, not expecting it to get in, but expecting to use it as a negotiating tool with the network censors ("OK, we'll cut that if we can keep this"), but, every once in a while, the censors either miss or don't get one of those things. The one I remember most is when the family goes to a video game conference or something like that, and Bart runs off saying "I'm gonna go toss the virtual salad!"

@Garrison
This is a common trick, actually! In fact, Ren & Stumpy got cancelled because they went so balls-out with it in the unintended final season that they went "fuck, are they *trying* to get the show cancelled? ...Ok sure"

@Garrison the all time greatest example of that was when the a Popsicle Sisters appeared on the Gong Show. Chuck Barris booked them (two girls in hot pants giving sloppy head to popsicles) as a sacrifice to the censor board but they got through. Clip’s on YouTube.

@FeistyBi Gotta feel at least a little sorry for the (likely all-male back then) censors for not recognizing the import of the routine. lol

@Garrison Chuck Barris always joked they must have stepped out for a smoke break right when that act came up for review.
