I'm trying to gradually break the habit of saying things like "this is stupid" or "you're an idiot," mostly as jokes (I don't tend to say these things sincerely to people in the first place). What words do other people use in place of words meant to disparage someone for their intelligence? I've been trying to use words like "ridiculous, asshat, a shitshow, clown," and similar things that are more about behavior than inherent intelligence (a concept which I'm told is rather problematic).

@squeedoodle I distinguish between behaviors and people. We all do things that are stupid, we all act like fools, etc.; it's ok to call it what it is.

But the occasional moment of idiocy doesn't define a person, and so it's generally unfair to call a person dumb/a fool/an idiot/etc.

Been doing this with my kids and they seem be finding it easier to forgive themselves for dumb mistakes, even when others fail to make the distinction

@squeedoodle I've overheard kids say "you're an idiot!" now, and seen my own go "yeah, but just for a second" or "nah, but that was a dumb mistake" and move on. Which… I think is healthy

@squeedoodle my personal favorite for work is what the hell kinda clownshoes operation are we running here.

Well that and i hum the Looney Toons theme when it gets really screwy
