I am sorry to announce that kinky.business will shut down on February 28, 2025.

When I first started doing this, for funsies and never for profit, in 2017, mastodon was barely starting to become more popular, tumblr had once again tangled itself up in its own mess, and Twitter had not yet been purchased by an insane billionaire. I wanted to play with the technology, and saw a chance to get together a smallish group of misfits like myself on the Internet to talk about kink with and explore each other's secrets or not so secret secrets.

For all intents and purposes, I was wildly successful. We have thousands of accounts, and hundreds of active users. We have developed a solid (not flawless, but nothing ever is) set of community rules, and had success enforcing them for the good of being a respectable kink instance on the fediverse. Some (many?) instances still defederated us, but I am proud to say that it never happened because of our moderation stance. Consent and mutual respect matters, online and offline.

Alas - running a mastodon instance is a lot of work, and needs love and caring. It also costs a lot of money - helped by our patreon of course, but never covered - and the next phase of growth would require me to spend a lot of time scaling the technical setup, as well as financial investment, and I cannot commit to this now. After almost 8 years, this not-a-business kinky business will have to come to an end.
